“A third
one?!?! You want a third old Volvo!!?” My wife, quite validly, was
startled by my announcement. I had many honest reasons, but I would only
articulate one; “There are 3 models of the car that I would like to have,
the P, S, and E. Actually there are 4, but the 4th is a wagon and I don’t
like the wagon.” “What will the neighbors say with all these cars?” She
was right, I already owned 3 other cars, and asking for the 3rd volvo
would take us to 6. Inside I thought, “Neighbors? She has neighbors; I
have future 1800 admirers!”When we bought our first Volvo back in 1990 (744), I
received an IPD catalog in the mail and on the cover was the most amazing
car I had ever seen. I was wondering why a Volvo catalog would have some
beautiful British car on the cover. Much later I found out that I was
partially correct. Today, I drive a 1968 1800S, a customized 1972 1800E
(with nitrous in the trunk), and a 1962 P1800 show car. I’ve also
collected (and had restored) many of the miniatures.
The best part about this whole “1800 thing I have
going on” is finding out that there are many others out there with the
same disease who can offer wonderful support! Lester and Randy of “Swedish
Car Specialists” in Schaumburg, Illinois, USA, have turned my autos into
practical driving machines (complete rebuild on the S) – Lester’s been
around long enough to have been factory trained on the 1800 in his early
days! Max Steinberg on ebay (volvomax) has helped me to collect some of
the most rare miniatures, and Alan & Grant at toytinker.com have an
amazing talent (and wit) for making a new miniature out of pure junk. My
1800S is now in the queue to be restored back to its original green at
alanauto.com.
