S-codes

The S-code is used to identify what equipment level a unit had upon delivery. Such equipment could be standard on one market, but extra option on others. Examples would include headrests, towing mount, engine preheater, etc. and combinations of these. Also police and taxi editions, etc. for different markets as well as special models for launches, shows or certain sales activities. In some cases this equipment was installed by the marketing companies in the sales countries and hence not necessarily factory installed. Volvo's division for Technical Documentation is responsible for these S-codes, but the technical or commercial meaning of the codes are often only known by the orderer of the special model. Volvo state that they only have S-codes from and including the 240-series in their computer systems.

The historical archives of the Swedish Volvo P1800 Club are very interested in knowing as much as possible around the S-codes for the 1800 series. If your car has an S-code, we would appreciate if you could let us know, in a mail to Fredrick, the code # and what is “Special” about the car?

Tamworth Rally in Australia is 21

Happy 21st Birthday.

At the Easter long weekend in 1988, the then separate Volvo 1800 Club and the Volvo 120 Club in Australia held their first Rally in the NSW country town of Tamworth. It still stands as one of the most memorable rallies ever held by the Clubs which have since combined to be the Volvo 1800-120 Club Australia. One of the records that hasn't been broken since, is the eleven ES models at the rally. Kevin Greenaway, an ES owner then, took those great memorable photos on the Sunday display day.

The Saint's Vacation

No, this is not about the 1941 movie with Hugh Sinclair as Simon Templar but actually "ST1"s summer vacation.

Greetings to all. I am pleased and proud to announce that "ST1" has been selected to be part of the Antique Automoble Club of America's (AACA) exhibit "The Sportscar in America". This exhibition is being held in the AACA Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania and will begin on May 22 and last until October 12. The AACA Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution.

The museum contains a magnificient display of automobiles in a variety of period settings and is well worth a stop even if you are not a car lover. Photos of the exhibits are allowed. Hershey, by the way, is indeed the chocolate capital of the US and their factory is nearby.

I dropped off "ST1" at the museum yesterday and while I will miss not being able to use it during the summer and early fall, I am happy that many people will be able to see it on display during the five months it will be there. In early October, the AACA holds it's world famous automotive swap meet (autojumble to my UK friends) so I hope the many world travelers who come to the meet will come by to visit as well.

Enclosed are some photos of "ST1" outside the AACA Museum and one of it inside. I will be returning to the museum once the cars are in their appropriate locations for the exhibit and will send some updated photos of "ST1".

Best Regards to All, Bill Krzastek

ST1 (NUV 648E) update

Hello to All and Happy New Year,

All of you are aware of "ST1"s famous role in "The Saint" and that it's actual first owner was Sir Roger Moore as documented by it's green logbook. What many of you may not know is that "ST1" actually had a famous film star as it's second owner as well.
By late 1968, production for "The Saint" series had been completed and Sir Roger purchased a Mercedes sedan as his principle personal vehicle. This meant that "ST1" was now no longer needed. Enter actor and producer Martin Benson.
Mr. Benson had been in many famous films such as "Exodus" and "The King and I". However, the role which most people associate him with is "Mr. Solo" from "Goldfinger". In this film, he plays the gangster to whom Sean Connery slips the tracking device. Later, his character is shot then crushed in a Lincoln Continental by "Oddjob". The crushed Lincoln is later returned to Goldfinger which causes Bond to quip, "You said he had a pressing engagement". (Please see attached photo for reference). Of course, Mr. Benson also appeared in "The Saint".
I'll let Mr. Benson tell his story about "ST1": read more....
Best Regards to All,
Bill Krzastek

1800S Estate ?

Do you know anything about this car?

A number of people have looked at it and the general view is that it could have been a design proposal. Externally the work done is obviously professional with many parts made to suit. The inside trim is a mess in the rear, very home made. Maybe it was built as a design exercise by some company but purely an external concept?

The car obviously escaped from wherever and someone put an interior in it. Please send me a mail if you have any information

ST1's Trip To Canada Part 2

Hello to All,

Welcome to Part 2 of "ST1"s trip to Canada. While at the Fleetwood Country Cruize-In at London, Ontario, ST1 was visited by another legend, Mr.George Barris, the "King of the Kustomizers". Mr. Barris is known worldwide for the many custom, film, and TV cars he designed and built since the 1950's such as the TV Batmobile, Munsters Coach, the Ala Kart, and dozens of others. Several of Mr. Barris's creations were on display but even he was interested in seeing "ST1", the Roger Moore "Saint" Volvo.
Mr. Barris has a website where he interviews people and talks about their cars. He chose "ST1" to be part of this and in the attached photos, we see Mr. Barris interviewing me (and vice-versa) about the car. During the interview, I found out that Mr. Barris has a connection to Roger Moore: turns out that Mr. Barris built a car for Sir Roger's first Bond film "Live and Let Die" and had actually met Mr. Moore during filming. "A real gentleman" is how Mr. Barris described Sir Roger.
Also on hand was Tony Davey, restorer of "ST1" who had flown over from England for the show. Tony is seen being interviewed by Mr. Barris in one of the photos. Plus, Irv Gordon, owner of the 2+ million mile Volvo can be seen in the backround of the first photo being interviewed from the folks from Old Cars Television. Small world indeed.

Best Regards to All,
Bill Krzastek

ST1 at Steve Plunkett's Country Cruize-In

Hello to All,
What an amazing weekend in London, Ontario at Steve Plunkett's Country Cruize-In. Not only did we have a great time but over $150,000 was raised for charity. We are glad that "ST1" was chosen to help participate in this "Saintly" endeavor. While at the show, I had the opportunity to meet and greet many fans of "The Saint" and Sir Roger Moore. It always surprises me to hear that people come to the show to specifically see "ST1" when there are so many other attractions. One family had each of their 5 family members take turns behind the wheel for photos! It's nice to know that this car meant so much to so many people.
We were interviewed several times about the car and it's history but two interviews really stand out: the first was by Rick Walker of Old Cars Television. In the photos that follow, we decided it would be fun to try to recreate the original publicity photos of Sir Roger and "ST1". I posed for the boot shot then persuaded Rick to please take over for the others. As you can see, the photos definitely improved by my absence!
In Part 2, we have a very special interviewer so... "Watch for the car of The Saint, it will return".

Best Regards to All,
Bill Krzastek

ST1 Update

Just wanted to let everyone know that "ST1" had a successful weekend at the Carlisle Import Festival. I met alot of "Saint" fans there as auto enthusiasts had come from as far away as Sweden to attend the event. Many photos were taken of the car and the backround exhibit. Several people told me how much this car meant to them and how happy they are to know that it still exists and has been sympathetically restored.
I was also quite surprised to learn that "ST1" was on the cover of the event magazine as well as the dash plaque and the event shirt! WOW, you can imagine how special this was! Attached is a photo of the exhibit and the magazine.
Next month, "ST1" will cross the border for a show in Canada. Stay tuned!
Best Regards,  Bill

I bought this car from the Original owner, who had this car everywhere from Colorado to Florida. the body shows this. I have the original purchase papers and everything! The odometer died in the early 80's (it shows around 165k) the car is estimated to have around 500k. The engine got a rebuild in the early 90's. All it needed was a new cam but everything was used fresh. Also the tranny got a refreshing. Car starts everytime, and is a joy to drive even with the original suspension.

The Saint's Cutaway car

Volvo used a cutaway on the series inside the studio. This was virtually unchanged until my 1967 Volvo 1800S was used. Since this car now had a black interior,(the two earlier cars were red),  the cutaway had to be changed as well. Also, the steering wheel was changed to one with a wood rim to match the real car but was not the correct Volvo accessory wheel! The real car has holes in the spokes, the cutaway had slots. The 1967 car was used more frequently for interior shots on the set than the previous car. When watching the episodes, you can tell whether it's the real car by looking at the upper interior quarter panels. If they are white, it's the mockup. If there are black (and have the interior lights), then it's the real car. The studio never changed these when they changed the seats!
